The Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office requested the public's help Friday in identifying a male found dead in the Rio Grande near Peñitas, according to a news release.

On Dec. 10, investigators say they responded to a rural area south of Peñitas in reference to a body found in the Rio Grande. Deputies met with Border Patrol agents who found the body.

Investigators say the body "displayed moderate signs of decomposition, and determined it was that of a young adult male with short dark-colored hair," according to the news release.

Though autopsy results are still pending, investigators say there were no visible signs of foul play.

According to the news release:

The male remains unidentified and Sheriff’s Investigators are releasing pictures of tattoos on the decedent’s arms, and clothing articles: blue jean pants with a red, white and blue canvas belt, and black-in-color sneakers with black laces. One tattoo is of what appears to be two skulls on the lower forearm, another tattoo with the words “Bendic Me Mi Nina” on the upper forearm, and a third tattoo of the grim reaper on the upper right forearm.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Major Crimes Unit at 956-383-8114.
