Six eye Democratic nomination for Hidalgo County Sheriff

Democratic precinct chairs in Hidalgo County will choose one of six people to be their Hidalgo County Sheriff candidate.

The deadline to file to be the nominee was 5:00 p.m. on Monday, June 9th.

The following six have applied to run on the Democratic ticket:

- Artemio Garza, Retired Texas State Trooper- Eddie Guerra, Interim Hidalgo County Sheriff- Frank Guerrero, Business Owner and Hidalgo County Reserve Deputy- Juan Gonzalez, San Juan Police Chief- Geovani Hernandez, La Joya Police Chief- Nereyda Morales Martinez, Attorney and Democratic Precinct Chair

Democratic precinct chairs will decide which of the six will face opponents from other parties.

However, no Republican has filed to run for Hidalgo County Sheriff. The deadline has not passed to run on the Republican ticket for Hidalgo County Sheriff.

Democratic precinct chairs will nominate their candidate for sheriff on July 26th.

Even though residents won't be able to vote for which candidate they want on the Democratic ballot, they can still make their voices heard by contacting their precinct chair, Action 4 News previously reported.

Eddie Guerra is the current interim sheriff after former Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Trevino resigned before he plead guilty to a money laundering charge.

The next Democratic Precinct Chair meeting will be held on June 14th.
