Slain DEA agent remembered with Red Ribbon Week

Two former DEA agents are trying to raise awareness about drug violence by sharing their personal experiences.

Red Ribbon week is a national campaign to honor law enforcement officers who TMve made sacrifices to fight drug crimes.

It was launched in 1988 in memory of Enrique "Kiki" Camarena.

The DEA agent was kidnapped, brutally tortured and murdered in Guadalajara.

Former agent Victor Cortez, Jr. was one of the men who volunteered to find him.

"I was kidnapped and tortured and almost killed," Cortez said. "As a matter of fact, they told me that I was going to suffer the same fate as Enrique Camarena, so I know firsthand what he went through what he suffered and what he was thinking."

He said Camarena was not just a coworker, he was a dear friend.
