A teenage babysitter is behind bars after he allegedly smoked marijuana in front of a baby he was supposed to be taking care of.

Harlingen police arrested 19-year-old Mark Anthony Gonzales on child endangerment and marijuana charges early Saturday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that officers were called to a disturbance at an apartment complex on the 800 block of North 27th Street around 2:20 a.m. Saturday.

Officers investigating the disturbance allegedly spoke to a Gonzales but noticed a strong odor of marijuana coming from inside the apartment.

Police looked inside and learned Gonzales had been smoking marijuana in the same room as a 4-month-old boy.

Gonzales told police that he was babysitting the child for his mother, who was out with a friend.

Paramedics rushed the baby to the Valley Baptist Medical Center for evaluation while officers notified Child Protective Services.

Gonzales appeared before a Harlingen Municipal Court judge where he was issued $5,500 in bonds.
