Smoking "weed" suspected motive in Palmview chase

Eric Peña // Palmview Police Department

A man is behind bars after leading police on a chase where authorities believe he was smoking marijuana in his car with some friends.

Palmview police arrested 18-year-old Eric Pea on an evading arrest charge late Sunday afternoon.

It all happened off Business 83 and Abram Road around 4:46 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Pea was behind the wheel of a Lincoln LS that made an improper turn.

A police officer used his lights and sirens but Pea refused to stop.

The car pulled into a house off Ariel Street where three passengers bailed out.

Pea allegedly came out of the car and faced the officer and refused to get off his cell phone but was taken into custody.

Police could not find the passengers but the officer noticed a strong smell of burnt marijuana inside Pea's car.

No drugs were found inside the car but Pea allegedly kicked the back seat of the officer's car and was charged with evading arrest.

The 18-year-old remains in custody at the Hidalgo County Jail under a $75,000 dollar bond.
