Eight suspects accused in the stabbing of a Spring Breaker on South Padre Island faced a judge on Friday morning.

The eight men all appeared before Judge Migdalia Lopez in the 197th State District Court in Brownsville.

Judge Lopez set the next hearing for the men on October 9th but the eight suspects are asking for a bond reduction.

A hearing for the bond reductions is expected to take place late Friday morning.

The eight men are accused in the stabbing and beating of Spring Breaker Derek Madrigal back in March.

Madrigal spent weeks in the hospital but survived the attack and returned to his life Dallas.

Authorities believe the men are part of the Mexican Mafia.

Investigators believe the men attacked Madrigal because he defended a woman they were harassing.

Judge Lopez agreed to reduce the bond for suspect Emilio John Ruvalcaba from $500,000 to $100,000 for each of the three counts against him.

Ruvalcaba's attorney says he is not a member of the Mexican mafia. He say that at the time officer picked him up he was very cooperative.
