A Starr County sex offender is among 637 gang members arrested in a nationwide crackdown targeting human smuggling and trafficking networks.
U.S. Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents reported arresting members from 168 gangs as part of Operation Nefarious.
ICE officials told Action 4 News that the operation kept the gang members under surveillance.
Agents started making arrests back in February and finished up on Wednesday.
Some 637 gang members were arrested nationwide but ICE officials reported 36 members of the Texas Syndicate, Hermanos Pistoleros, Mexican Mafia and Valluco prison gangs were arrested in South Texas.
ICE officials said the gangs are doing the dirty for illegal immigrant smuggling networks.
Of the 36 arrests in South Texas, ICE officials reported 16 were from Laredo, 11 were from San Antonio and nine were from the Rio Grande Valley.
A list of those arrested was not immediately available but ICE officials confirmed Valluco gang member Jorge Luis Garcia of Roma was among the nine arrested in the Valley.
Court records show that 30-year-old Garcia lived off Tulipan Street in Roma and is a convicted sex offender, who was arrested for the sexual assault of 15-year-old girl back in 2003.
Garcia TMs criminal history includes marijuana, aggravated assault, aggravated sexual assault, theft, resisting arrest, evading arrest and burglary.
The Roma man is now in custody for evading and resisting arrest and outstanding warrants for aggravated assault.
