Stealing an 18-pack of beer could end up costing a Harlingen more than $30,000 dollars.

Harlingen police arrested 49-year-old Gabriel Lopez on a theft charge early Friday morning.

Investigators told Action 4 News that Lopez is accused of stealing an 18-pack of Budweiser beer.

It all happened at the Stripes convenience store at 930 Morgan Boulevard late Thursday night.

Lopez allegedly walked in the store, headed to the cooler, grabbed the beer and walked out the door.

Officers found Lopez with the beer off South 6th Street and South Commerce Street.

Investigators charged Lopez with theft but the charges were upgraded to a state jail felony because he had at least two previous convictions for theft.

Harlingen police records show that Lopez had been arrested at 12 times for theft.

Lopez remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail under a $30,000 dollar bond.
