Stealing a candy bar at a convenience store ended up costing a Harlingen woman $11,000 dollars.
Harlingen police arrested 40-year-old Connie Butler on Tuesday evening.
Investigators told Action 4 News that Butler walked into a Stripes convenience store off F Street and West Harrison Avenue at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Butler allegedly selected a $1.79 chocolate bar, put it in her shorts and left without paying.
A store clerk called police who found Butler sitting on a bench at nearby Gutierrez Park.
A routine records check revealed that Butler had two or more past convictions for theft prompting officers to charge her with state jail felony theft.
Under Texas state law, theft suspects with two or more prior convictions may face higher charges regardless of the value of what they stole.
Court records show that Butler also previous arrests for prostitution and escape.
Butler appeared before a Harlingen Municipal Court judge on Wednesday where she was issued an $11,000 dollar bond.
