A man was arrested outside of an HEB after he and his girlfriend attempted to shoplift and hide the stolen items in a car seat carrying a 1 1/2 month old baby.
Juan Carlos Lopez Ruiz was caught at the HEB on the 1100 Block of West Business 77, but his girlfriend is still on the run.
San Benito police first responded to the scene in reference to a female shoplifter being chased out of the store by security.
The store TMs security/loss prevention said the woman, Ruiz TM girlfriend, had pushed a cart full of groceries out of the store without paying for them.
They said once she exited the store, the woman crossed Business 77 and headed north on foot.
While searching for her, officers found Ruiz by the HEB gas pumps with that shopping cart, the 1 1/2 month old baby and a 2-year-old toddler.
Officers lifted the blanket covering the car seat and found stolen merchandise inside.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the children belonged to Ruiz TM girlfriend.
She is reported to have also had a 5-year-old and an 8-year-old with her when she fled from the store.
A criminal investigation has been launched to find her.
Child Protective Services (CPS) was contacted about the incident. Because their mother is expected to face criminal charges, the children are being taken care of by their aunt.
Ruiz was charged with abandoning/endangering a child charges and was taken to the Cameron County Jail.
The 38-year-old TMs bonds total $13,000.
