Authorities are investigating a shooting that ended with a stray bullet hitting a woman in the face at a popular place for mud racing and off-road vehicle.

Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office deputies reported that the shooting happened in the "Mud Pits" off Whale and South Jackson Roads south of Pharr around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

The area is private property but is often bused by off-road vehicle enthusiasts because of the terrain.

Investigators told Action 4 News that a deputy was patrolling the area when he was flagged down by two women leaving in a car.

One of the two women had a gunshot wound to her face.

The woman was able to speak and told the deputy that she heard several shots before she was hit in the face by a stray bullet.

Paramedics rushed the woman to a local hospital where she was listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Law enforcement officials surrounded the area and detained several people for questioning.

No arrests have been made and no criminal charges have been filed at this time but the investigation continues.

Anyone has information about this case is asked to call the Hidalgo County Sheriff TMs Office at (956) 383-8114.
