Suspect in fatal La Feria accident claims he was not the driver

La Feria police are trying to piece together a fatal accident that claimed the life of a well-known businessman.

A suspect is detained but not facing charges for the man's death at this time.

La Feria police said 57-year-old Silvestre Juan Guajardo was killed in an accident off Expressway 83 and Solis Road on Tuesday night.

The fatal wreck happened in front of the Guajardo TMs business, Cantera's, a brick and masonry company.

La Feria Police Chief Don Garcia said investigators believe Timothy Paul McGee was driving the white pickup truck involved in the accident.

The Arizona native allegedly lost control of his truck and veered from the road onto the Cantera's property.

Guajardo was standing in the yard loading up a trailer when McGee TMs truck hit him.

Chief Garcia said Guajardo was dragged several yards and died due to some of the worst injuries he's ever seen.

Police interviewed McGee at the scene.

"At the scene, when talking to him, he showed some signs of intoxication and also a strong odor of alcohol emitting from his breath. And when asked to give his name and date of birth he intentionally gave the wrong name and date of birth, Chief Garcia said.

McGee is currently charged with failure to identify and public intoxication.

Chief Garcia said McGee is not cooperating with authorities.

The Arizona native allegedly told police that he was not the driver of the truck but rather the passenger.

A bond has not been set, pending an ongoing investigation.
