Authorities have identified a man who ran across Expressway 83 during rush hour traffic to escape from police.

Jail records show that Harlingen police arrested 46-year-old Albert Salazar Aguilar on multiple charges on Friday evening.

Harlingen police told Action 4 News that it all started with a traffic stop between Stuart Place and Altas Palmas Roads.

Court records show that an officer pulled Aguilar over for tailgating and that he acted too friendly, was nervous and even shaking at times.

It all went south when the officer allegedly recognized Aguilar from a previous cocaine arrest and asked if he could search his SUV.

Aguilar denied the previous arrest and allegedly tried to get back in his SUV several times where he struggled with the officer.

According to the court records, the 46-year-old man grabbed two beanie hats inside the SUV and took off running.

The officer caught up to him, knocked Aguilar to the ground and pepper sprayed him.

Aguilar responded by getting back up and running across the expressway during traffic where he was tackled by another officer.

Investigators found tiny baggies with 18.6 grams of cocaine inside the beanie hats.

Police charged Aguilar with possession of a controlled substance, evading arrest and resisting arrest.

The Harlingen man remains in custody at the Cameron County Jail under $93,000 dollars in bonds.
