The flu season is off to a deadly start in Hidalgo County.
During a Thursday morning press conference, health officials confirmed 24 cases of the H1N1 flu virus in Hidalgo County since November.
Hidalgo County Health Department officials confirmed that six people have died from H1N1, which is more commonly known as swine flu.
Officials confirmed that a 7-year-old child and five adults died from contagioius disease.
All six victims had pre-existing medical conditions prior to contracting swine flu.
Officials are reminding area residents to get a flu shot to protect themselves against the disease.
So far, about 40,000 vaccines have been given in Hidalgo County, mostly to children.
Officials reported that one in three Hidalgo County employees have been vaccinated.
