A late appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court has delayed the execution of a South Texas gang member charged in an ambush shooting that left four women dead.
Robert Gene Garza's lethal injection has been put on hold while justices consider the appeal. There's no word on how long that will take.
The 30-year-old death row inmate was condemned in the September 2002 shootings in Hidalgo County. He would be the 12th Texas has executed this year.
Garza also was charged but never tried for participating in what became known in the Rio Grande Valley as the Edinburg massacre, the January 2003 slayings of six people at a home in the city.
