A Brownsville teen is behind bars after he allegedly tried to sneak six illegal immigrants past the border fence and into a Southmost neighborhood.
It all happened near the intersection of Calle Milpa Verde and Palacio Real around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Border Patrol agents arrested 17-year-old Edgar Gutierrez and six illegal immigrants.
Gutierrez told investigators that he was supposed to get paid $100 per immigrant to guide them to the north side of the border fence and into the neighborhood.
The Brownsville teen could not be charged with federal immigrant smuggling charges because he is under 18 years old.
Border Patrol agents took the immigrants into custody but handed Gutierrez over to Cameron County Sheriff TMs Department deputies for prosecution under state unlawful transport charges.
Gutierrez appeared before Cameron County Magistrate Judge Patricia Edelstein on Wednesday morning.
Residency and citizenship information for Gutierrez was not immediately available.
Judge Edelstein issued Gutierrez a total of $60,000 dollars in bonds for the case.
