A Los Fresnos high school student has passed away in a hospital almost two weeks after being injured in a DWI wreck on South Padre Island.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers confirmed 16-year-old Alex Soto died at the Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen on Wednesday evening.

The Los Fresnos High School junior and another person were hospitalized following a two-car wreck off Park Road 100 and Beach Access 6 back on March 16th.

Soto had remained in the hospital since the accident and passed away on Wednesday evening.

State troopers arrested 19-year-old Anthony Rojelio Rodriguez on two counts of intoxication assault following the accident.

The Elsa teen remains locked up at the Cameron County Jail under $50,000 dollars in bonds.

It's not clear where Rodriguez got the alcohol he allegedly drank before the accident but the case remains under investigation.

Authorities have not upgraded the charges against Rodriguez to intoxication manslaughter at this time.

A spokeswoman with the Cameron County District Attorney's Office said the case will be reviewed by a grand jury.

Los Fresnos CISD Superintendent Gonzalo Salazar reported that the school district is providing grief counselors to students and staff.

"We are a tight-knit community in Los Fresnos," Salazar said in a statement. "We grieve together and we celebrate together. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family in these difficult times."
