Summer vacation is still in full swing for local students but many Rio Grande Valley families are planning ahead for the school year.
They TMre taking advantage of a free school supplies program and lining up for hours to get them.
Volunteers passed out 9,000 backpacks filled with school supplies to students in Harlingen.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Cameron-Willacy County Projects teamed up for the giveaway.
Organizer Amalya Garza spoke to Action 4 News about the giveaway.
"We realize that this is a very small token, Garza said. Parents go through it every 24-7 365 days a year. This is a small gesture on our part to get these kids ready to get themselves educated."
The freebies were picked up by students of all ages from kindergarten to college.
Jessica Cavazos is a mom and a teacher.
She sees first hand with her students just how bad they need help getting school supplies.
"It TMs really nice for them to come out to the community and offer us supplies, Cavazos said. We need to take advantage of it."
Another backpack giveaway is scheduled for between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on August 18th at the Cameron Park Community Center in Brownsville.
