Three candidates seek open seat on McAllen ISD's School Board Place 3
Three candidates seek the open seat on McAllen ISD's School Board Place 3 in the upcoming May election.
The Place 3 seat is currently held by Trustee John Ball, who is not seeking re-election this year.
Debbie Crane Aliseda, Raul A. Moreno, and Mark Dougherty have announced they are running for the position and expressed that educational funding is a high priority.
McAllen ISD has pushed for more proposed spending in the past, with a proposed $297 million dollar bond in May of 2015. About 70 percent of voters voted against the bond, according to preliminary results from Hidalgo County Elections Department. Borrowing the money would have required a 16.5-cent property tax.
Debbie Crane is a former McAllen ISD Trustee, and sat in Place 1 when the bond was on the ballot.
“Raising people’s taxes was not the right way to do it, and I also didn’t think that every single school needed to be touched,” Crane said.
Moreno stated he didn’t agree with the way it was presented in 2015.
Dougherty stated that the tax was too high for residents, calling Hidalgo County “one of the poorest counties in the state, if not the nation.”
Candidates will continue to campaign until election day on May 6. Early voting will begin on April 24.
