A man remains fighting for his life while three people are behind bars in connection to a shooting near two schools in Brownsville.

Cameron County Sheriff Omar Lucio said 35-year-old shooting victim Roman Garcia is in critical condition at a hospital in San Antonio.

Deputies arrested Clarisa Laila Maldonado, Jason Edward Crawford and Roberto Ramos, Jr. for their roles in the crime.

But Sheriff Lucio said the actual gunmen identified as 18-year-old Gerardo Montejano is still on the run.

Deputies reported that Maldonado had been dating Garcia for some time.

Maldonado, Crawford and Montejano ran into the Garcia at the El Jardin Superette gas station off FM 802 on Monday.

A fight between Garcia and the group allegedly ended with Montejano shooting Garcia in the head.

"So when they confronted this individual some kind of a scuffle ensued during the scuffle supposedly one of the individuals was being held by the neck by Mr. Garcia, the second individual came out and shot him while he was there on the pavement, Sheriff Lucio said.

The 9 mm weapon used in the shooting was recovered at Ramos TM home prompting a tampering with evidence charge.

Maldonado and Crawford both aggravated assault, engaging in organized crime, hindering apprehension and tampering with evidence charges.
