Three members of a family from Houston are behind bars in the Rio Grande Valley after they allegedly tried to smuggle $417,300 dollars worth of meth into the United States.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers arrested Maria de la Luz Nieto, Julian Luna-Nieto and Narcizo Nieto-Gutierrez on Thursday.

The three drove up from Matamoros at Brownsville TMs Gateway International Bridge.

Customs officers sent their 1999 Mercury Villager to secondary inspection where authorities found 24 packages with 27.87 pounds of meth inside.

The three appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Ronald Morgan in Brownsville on Friday morning.

Investigators said all three suspects were Mexican nationals who lived in Houston.

Judge Morgan denied bond for all of them until a Wednesday afternoon hearing.
