      Trash can fire prompts evacuation at a Harlingen school

      A small fire prompted an evacuation at Travis Elementary School in Harlingen

      Authorities are investigating a fire that prompted an evacuation at an elementary school in Harlingen.

      It all happened at Travis Elementary School off East Polk Avenue just after 9 a.m. Friday.

      Investigators told Action 4 News that firefighters were called to the school for a trash can fire in one of the boy's bathrooms.

      Firefighters quickly put out the fire.

      No injuries were reported but students were evacuated from the building as a precaution.

      The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

      Harlingen CISD Statement

      At approximately 9:15 a.m. a small fire was started in a bathroom trash can at Travis Elementary. All protocols were followed as administration acted quickly to extinguish the flames and safely evacuate students and staff from the building. Shortly after, classes resumed as scheduled. Let this be a reminder to students that we must work together to ensure the safety of our HCISD community and at no time should they put themselves or others in a situation where harm is a possibility. We are currently reviewing the situation and appropriate action will be taken.
