Troopers seize 340 pounds of marijuana after pursuit in Hidalgo County
Troopers seized more than 300 pounds of marijuana Thursday after a pursuit in Hidalgo County.
At about 11:15 a.m., a trooper conducting routine patrol on U.S. 83, west of Farm-to-Market Road 886, observed a 1997 Blue Plymouth Voyager following too closely behind a passenger car, according to a criminal complaint and a news release from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
When the trooper activated his emergency lights, the driver of the Voyager reportedly refused to stop, prompting a brief pursuit.
The driver of the Voyager — identified as 51-year-old Ramiro Eden Clarke of Rio Grande City — stopped in a brushy area and fled on foot. Troopers located and apprehended Clarke.
During a search of Clarke's vehicle, troopers found 30 bundles of marijuana weighing 340 pounds on the rear floor board and cargo area, according to the news release.
Clarke was charged with possession of marijuana and evading arrest with a motor vehicle.
Clarke remains in the Hidalgo County jail on a $60,000 bond and couldn't be reached for comment.
