Tropical low gaining strength in Bay of Campeche

A low pressure area over the Yucatan peninsula is gaining strength Saturday evening as it moves over warmer waters in the Bay of Campeche.

The area of clouds and thunderstorms has grown over the past 24 hours and now has a 50 percent chance of developing into a tropical cyclone over the next 48 hours.

Moving in a west-northwestward direction, this area of low pressure is expected to bring showers to the Rio Grande Valley Sunday and Monday whether it becomes a tropical cyclone or continues as just an area of low pressure.

Forecast models indicate the center of the area of low pressure will move over the state of Veracruz, Mexico.
