The 2013 Atlantic Hurricane season can now claim tropical system number 3.
The National Hurricane Center confirms Tropical Storm Chantal has formed over the Southern Atlantic Ocean.
As of 8 a.m., Chantal had winds sustained at 40 mph and was moving west at 26 mph.
The current track takes the storm on a westerly path, before turning to the northwest over Haiti/Dominican Republic, then just west of Florida over the Bahamas by Friday.
This is the preliminary projection and will be watched closely as the week progresses.
The upgrade comes as the Rio Grande Valley continues to experience a warm, moist pattern brought by a low pressure area and associated trough that are pulling in tropical moisture.
That is firing up showers and a few thunderstorms, as will be the pattern into the morning and afternoon.
The chances for rain dwindle beginning Tuesday, then increase again Wednesday and Thursday.
