Two alleged drug smugglers are behind after they tried to flee from Border Patrol agents in a south Weslaco neighborhood.

U.S. Border Patrol agents arrested Cesar Coronado-Zuniga and Roman Murillo-Noriega on federal drug charges on Thursday afternoon.

Border Patrol agents spotted the two men in a white Ford pickup truck with a green trailer in the San Pedro Road area south of Weslaco around 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Agents followed the men and noticed they were leaving the Rio Grande River with cargo in the bed of the truck.

Border Patrols followed them up FM 88 and into town but the two men bailed out near Mile 5 North and Westgate Drive.

Authorities caught the two men nearby and found 61 bundles with 1,769 pounds of marijuana inside the trailer and the bed of the truck.

Both Coronado-Zuniga and Murillo-Noriega appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Ormsby in McAllen on Friday morning.

Judge Ormsby denied bond for them until a Wednesday afternoon hearing.
