Undercover drug bust goes bad in Mercedes

A sting operation ended with an officer firing his weapon near a busy Mercedes shopping center and the suspect getting away.

It all went down behind a Chili's restaurant next to the Outlet Mall in Mercedes late Monday afternoon.

Mercedes Police Chief Olga Maldonado told Action 4 News it all started as part of an undercover sting operation.

An alleged drug dealer agreed to meet an undercover officer at the restaurant.

Maldonado said police were attempted to arrest the suspect when he reversed his vehicle and tried run over one of the officers.

The police chief said her officer fired his weapon in self-defense but the suspect left the mall area in his vehicle.

Nobody was injured but Maldonado said the suspect managed to escape after leading officers on a chase.

Neither the identity nor vehicle description for the suspect were immediately available.

Maldonado said the officer who fired his weapon has been placed on administrative leave as per department procedure and pending the outcome of an internal investigation.
