Monday, Mission police said a smuggler abused the trust of a 13-year-old Salvadoran girl.
The girl was smuggled into the country with her mother, but was separated when Border Patrol and Mission police rounded up an influx of undocumented immigrants.
Police said one of the smugglers grabbed the young girl, took her to a wooded area and raped her near the Rio Grande River.
The young lady told police he got on a walkie talkie and told someone he was getting ready to cross back and he let her go, Corporal Manuel Casas, Mission Police Department, said.
The teen was found walking along FM 494 by a resident who fed her and washed her clothes.
She was turned over to Border Patrol who took her to the hospital.
This is just a part of the stories we hear because alot of these young people get caught by Border Patrol and they get deported, we never hear their stories, Martha Sanchez, La Union Del Pueblo Entero, said.Sanchez told Action 4 News undocumented immigrants who are victims of sexual assault can seek justice without fear of being deported.
If an attorney gets involved they are able to help them to stay as witnesses here to persecute the perpetrators of this crime, Sanchez said.
Police sent off evidence of the rape which could provide DNA of the suspect.
We are going to make sure if we get the opportunity to catch this guy we are going to take him and we are going to bring justice to that young ladies family and to her, Corporal Casas said.
Action 4 contacted both Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement, neither could confirm the location of the girl or her mother at this time.
A representative from Immigration and Customs Enforcement said agents to investigate crimes regarding rape.
In March a man was sentenced to time in federal prison for smuggling undocumented immigrants at a stash house in San Juan and raping two undocumented woman.
