UPDATE: Woman killed during Harlingen drug chase

A 44-year-old woman is dead after a suspect in a drug chase ran a red light and hit her car.

It all happened off South Ed Carey Drive and the frontage road of U.S. Expressway 77/83 late Thursday morning.

Harlingen police told Action 4 News that the incident started as part of Special Investigations Unit case.

Officers tried to pull over the driver of a blue Dodge pickup truck off of East New Hampshire Street around 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

The driver refused to stop for police and led them on a chase down Hale Street and then Ed Carey Drive.

Witnesses told Action 4 News that they had to get out of the way for the speeding truck.

Officers said the suspect ran a red light at the frontage road of U.S. Expressway 77/83 and hit a silver Nissan car.

It TMs not clear how fast the blue truck was going but both the male driver and the female passenger of the Nissan were taken to the Valley Baptist Medical Center.

Investigators said the 44-year-old female passenger died as a result of her injuries.

The male driver was arrested at the scene on weapons and drug charges. His female passenger is facing a drug charge.

Neither the names of the victims nor the suspects are being released at this time.

Public records show that the silver Nissan the victims were driving was registered to a Harlingen couple: 50-year-old Javier Osornio and his 44-year-old wife Maria Osornio.

An investigation continues while police said additional charges may be filed in the case.

Both Interim Police Chief Michael Kester and the Harlingen Police Department expressed their condolences and deepest sympathy to the family members of the victim.
