U.S. Postal Service extends Saturday hours at Rio Grande Valley locations
There are only ten days left before Christmas to send your gifts out to friends and families near, far and overseas, but if you’re planning on doing ground-shipping, the chances of your packages arriving by Christmas Day is very slim.
The U. S. Postal Service (USPS) in McAllen is experiencing about a 25 percent increase in packages in comparison to last year.
McAllen U.S. Postal Service Post Master Billy Smith says there are other mailing options.
"Priority mail is still effective, it's good for two to three days,” said Smith. “Express mail will probably be the only thing that you can get to Christmas by Christmas day."
When shipping out packages, it is also important to make sure a valid address is used to avoid delays.
Some of the common mistakes that people make is forgetting to put the directional like south, west, north or east and also the apartment or suite number.
To alleviate long lines, the Postal Service will have employees assisting customers in line who are paying with either a debit or credit card.
Although extra service is provided, customers like Michael Logan encourages others to plan ahead when it comes to shipping out packages.
"It moves pretty fast over here, but I advise you to get here as soon as possible and mail it off so that it gets there in time for Christmas,” said Logan.
To help with the holiday hustle, all U.S. Postal Service locations in the Valley have extended their Saturday Hours:
