Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki has resigned amid an ongoing political scandal.
President Barack Obama confirmed Shinseki's resignation during a Friday morning press conference.
The resignation comes amid a scandal involving the deaths of veterans seeking care, long wait times and allegations of document shredding.
Recent congressional hearings about the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs ended with members of congress calling for Shinseki's resignation.
President Obama said Shinseki offered his resignation.
During the press conference, President Obama said Sloan Gibson would serve as interim secretary until a replacement has been made.
