Valley AIDS Council holds 5k run to raise awareness

Participants in the Viva La Vida 5k run

The Valley AIDS Council held their first-ever Viva La Vida 5K run Saturday morning in Harlingen along Wilson Road.

The purpose of the event, which the organization hopes will become an annual one, is raising local awareness about HIV/AIDS prevention.

The Council says people aged 13-24 account for one of every four new infections, a number they believe they can reduce dramatically with educational efforts.

Over 150 runners participated in the event, raising over $9000 towards the cause.

The Council said every penny of the money raised will go towards HIV/AIDS prevention.
