Valley firefighter laid to rest following battle with brain cancer

A Rio Grande Valley firefighter has been laid to rest after losing his battle with terminal brain cancer.

Jaime Zapata served in the Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department and Mission Fire Department.

He was diagnosed with brain cancer two years ago but his condition recently deteriorated while at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.

Firefighters reached out to Action 4 News and Valley residents for help to pay for a special flight to bring him back home.

Valley residents raised more than $10,000 dollars for Zapata this past weekend.

The Edinburg Volunteer Fire Department confirmed that Zapata passed away Thursday afternoon.

Zapata was buried on Monday morning with family and firefighters from several agencies in attendance.
