Valley soldier killed by IED while on duty in Afghanistan

A Rio Grande Valley soldier is among the latest casualties in the war on terror.

U.S. Army Spc. Kevin Cardoza was one of five American soldiers killed by an improvised explosive device.

The deadly blast happened in Afghanistan on Saturday.

Cardoza is a native of Mercedes but graduated from Edcouch-Elsa High School in 2011.

The 20-year-old most recently lived in El Paso where he was engaged.

Cardoza is the 47th soldier from the Valley to die in Iraq or Afghanistan.

He leaves behind two children.
