After much anticipation, officials have decided the name of the Rio Grande Valley's newly merged university.
UT Board of Regents Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa made the announcement during a Thursday morning meeting in Austin.
The new school created by the merger of UTB and UTPA will be named the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley, or UTRGV.
Students at both schools gathered for viewing parties on both campuses.
Officials said UTRGV was the number one choice by on-line voters, who cast their ballots on social media.
The new name will take effect in the Fall Semester 2015.
But there is still no word who will serve as the school's president or what the mascot will be.
