65-year- old Apolinar Gracida was buying a cake for his wife on Mother's Day, but would never get it to her.
The beloved Raymondville man died after his Dodge truck veered off Interstate 37 near Mathis Sunday, across a median and rolled over killing the man.
The family says he was able to make two phone calls before the accident alerting family members that something was wrong, but it allegedly wasn't his health was first reported. The mysterious accident remains under investigation while his loved ones say goodbye to a person so many looked up to.
"He was always so proud of everyone else. I'm proud of my dad," said Eddie Garcida.
Polo was his nickname, but many children called him grandpa since he would cheer on his granddaughter at her softball games and give coaching tips to anyone who asked.
To Eddie Garcida, he was dad, he was his hero.
