Victim, suspect in Harlingen shooting were related

Two other men were arrested on Monday in connection to a shooting in downtown Harlingen over the weekend, bringing the total number of suspects to three.

Family members told Action 4 News one of the victims was also related to the first man arrested over the shooting.

Avelia Saldana is the wife of Agustin Gonzalez Jr, 23. The Mercedes man was one of the men killed on Saturday night along with his friend Edgar Villanueva.

Both men were riding a white Ford Mustang down Harrison Avenue, when at least three men shot at them using a rifle.

The three men arrested for the crime include Villanueva TMs cousin, Jose Luis Vega, 21, as well as Baldemar Vega and Jerardo Olivarez.

It is unclear at this time if Jose Luis and Baldemar are related.

Jose Luis was arrested Sunday afternoon inside his San Benito home.

He was charged with two counts of capital murder and one count of engaging in organized crime on Monday, his bond was set at $2.1 million.

San Benito police arrested Baldemar and Olivarez on Monday.

They were taken into custody and transferred to Harlingen police.

They will be arraigned tomorrow morning.

Harlingen police is still working on finding out the motive behind the shootings.

"I can tell you that it is not gang related but they're still trying to talk to all the parties involved to see why this happened," Sgt. Myriam Anderson said.

But regardless of the motive, Saldana said her family is grieving tonight.

The shooting has left her five children without their father.
