Volunteers offer free tax assistance to RGV families

STC assists with income taxes

Local students are doing their part in giving back to the community by offering free tax return assistance.

South Texas College students have been doing income tax returns for the last five weeks for anyone who's looking for some extra help this tax season.

The students are trained by their professors and tax return experts on how to properly submit returns.

So far, STC finance students have helped more than 340 people with their taxes. However, STC students are not the only volunteers helping.

There are more than 14 free tax preparation sites throughout Hidalgo and Starr County with VITA volunteers from every profession.

Last year, more than 3,818 Rio Grande Valley families were helped by VITA.

If you still need to file your taxes and would like free assistance, you can visit any of the locations until Thursday.

All you need is a copy of your W-2, valid ID, social security cards for all household members and bank routing numbers, if you wish to have the money direct deposited.
