Voters elect three new members to Progreso ISD school board

Three new school board members elected to Progreso ISD

Months of political scandals ended with voters electing three new members to Progreso ISD school board.

More than 1,300 out of 3,200 registered voters went to the polls for the school board election.

Three seats were up for grabs following months of scandals.

FBI agents arrested school board president Michael Vela, his brother and their father in the "Pay To Play" bribery scandal back in August.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers arrested school board member Felix Hernandez on smuggling marijuana last month.

The nine candidates in the race divided into slates based on the colors red, white and blue.

Candidates on the "white" slate were reported to be aligned with political allies of Vela and Hernandez.

Voters elected "blue" candidate Juan Garcia, Jr. to the Place 2 seat.

"Blue" candidate Leo Rodriguez unseated "white" candidate Juan J. Ramos to claim the Place 4 seat.

But "white" candidate Juan J. Ramos, Jr. won the Place 5 seat.

The younger Ramos won even though voters had unseated his father.

The three school board members are expected to be sworn into office during the next school board meeting on May 14th.
