Tropical Storm Karen is hundreds of miles away from the Rio Grande Valley but its effects are being felt along the coast.

Cameron County officials have shut down Boca Chica Beach as well as Beach Access 5 and Beach Access 6 on South Padre Island.

Officials said the the decision to close the beaches was made due to increased currents and rip tides.

Both Isla Blanca Park and beaches inside the city limits of South Padre Island will remain open.

Visitors are asked to heed any warnings posted on the beach.
