Two Weslaco residents are behind bars for allegedly stealing merchandise with wire cutters.
Authorities arrested Elizabeth Laverne Baunsgard and Gilbert Sanchez Jr. after a tip from a customer at Bass Pro Shops just before 1:30 p.m. Sunday.
According to Harlingen police, the officer recognized the vehicle, driven by 50-year-old Sanchez, from a recent burglary at the shop.
The officer stopped Sanchez and detected an odor of alcohol from his breath.
As the Harlingen officer was speaking to Sanchez, Baunsgard exited the store.
According to authorities, the 38-year-old woman noticed the officers, stopped and immediately began walking the other way.
Baunsgard emptied her purse in the back of a truck with almost $250 worth of merchandise from Bass Pro Shop and a pair of wire cutters she allegedly used to take the merchandise.
Harlingen police arrested Baunsgard for theft.
According to police, she has multiple counts of theft from 2008, this past March and in the state of Washington.
Authorities arrested Sanchez for public intoxication.
A bond for Sanchez is pending, and he could face theft charges.
A bond of $10,000 was set for 38-year-old Baunsgard.
