Weslaco shooting victim dies

A few days before the New Year, a Weslaco man was turning around on South Westgate when he was met by bullets shooting out from another vehicle.

"People in a blue Ford Explorer Sports Trac had been driving around Ramos Street. Ramos exited the residence and drove down Westgate then attempted to turn around. They were parked at the stop sign and shots rang out, says Weslaco Police Spokesperson Danny Elizondo.

Ernesto Ramos was shot in the head.

The suspects in the vehicle darted from the scene leaving Ramos in his car, clinging to life.

The shooter on the run faced charges of aggravated assault as Ramos was kept on life support the next few days.

Monday night, that all changed when Ramos died.

According to Weslaco police, the murder investigation is focusing on a possible hit on Ramos which could be linked to a gang.

Elizondo says, "He was part of a gang. It TMs an on going investigation so we can TMt release that information at this time."

There was no weapon found in Ramos' vehicle and the only information police have on the suspect vehicle is what they're hoping the community can use to track down the killer.

"We're looking for a blue Ford Explorer Sports Trac. Call Weslaco Crime Stoppers with any information at 968-TIPS."
