Weslaco teen killed after jet ski collides with boat

A 13-year-old from Weslaco is dead after he and his 17-year-old brother crashed into a 19-foot fishing boat while on a jet ski, according to the City of South Padre Island.

According to a city press release, the collision happened 500 yards out in the Laguna Madre Bay near South Padre Island's entertainment district Saturday around 5:00 p.m.

Authorities pronounced the 13-year-old dead at the scene.

His 17-year-old brother was said to be taken to Valley Baptist Regional Hospital in Brownsville.

The father of the teens reportedly rented two jet skis.

The father and another person were said to be on one of the jet skis, while the brothers rode the other.

Texas Parks and Wildlife is investigating.

"It is such a tragedy when we lose someone so young," said South Padre Island Police Chief Randy Smith. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this extremely difficult time."
