Wet roads blamed in Weslaco woman's death

Wet roads are being blamed in a Weslaco woman's death following an overnight accident just north of the Rio Grande Valley.

It all happened on the southbound lanes of Highway 77 just three miles south of Sarita just after 12:30 p.m. Sunday.

Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state troopers are investigating the fatal crash.

State troopers said a Dodge pickup truck was traveling south when the driver lost control and crashed.

Investigators told Action 4 News that due to the wet conditions the pickup entered a side skid and struck a tree with its right passenger side.

State troopers said 75-year-old passenger Beatriz Alicia Garza of Weslaco died on impact.

Paramedics rushed the driver to a hospital in Corpus Christi.

State troopers reported that the driver, who was only identified as a 74-year-old man from Donna, was last listed in critical condition.
