Widow recounts murder-suicide at Winter Texan RV Park

Hidalgo County Sheriff investigators are looking into a murder-suicide at the Bentsen Grove RV Park in Palmview.

It happened Thursday after 6 p.m. and comes as a shock to residents who call the park home.

Just two days shy of their 56th wedding anniversary, Barb Lau found her husband dead.

I wasn TMt there, I didn TMt see it, she said. I just heard it.

Her husband, 75 year-old Carl Lau was working on his van Thursday night as his neighbor Richard Durst told him a story.

According to Barb, her husband asked Durst to leave because he appeared to be belligerent and drunk.

Every time he told his story, he got louder and my husband just wanted him to please leave, she said.

Durst did leave, but he returned to Barb TMs home and shot Carl once in the head.

Barb was nearby and heard the gunshot, then saw Durst drive to his home on a golf cart.

As deputies arrived on the scene, a gunshot was heard down the street.

Durst was found inside his home with a shotgun in his hand and a bullet in his head.

"His wife is in the hospital in very bad condition, Barb said. I guess he decided to take it out on my husband."

Originally from Missouri, Barb and Carl chose to made the RV Park their home.

It was a nice park; everybody is friendly, she said.

Now, instead of celebrating their marriage this Saturday, Barb will be preparing to bury the love of her life.

He was just a wonderful man; a very caring person, she said.

The Sheriff TMs office ordered an autopsy to be performed on both men.

No more arrests are expected to be made.
