Woman leaves 3-year-old alone at home while she works

A San Benito woman is behind bars for abandoning or endangering a child.

Cassandra Garza was arrested for the charge.

A witness called police about a child in the street alone.

Officers responded and found the 3-year-old boy outside his home on the 1000 block of Ben Lora in San Benito.

When officers knocked on the front door no one answered, so they went around the house and found a door on the side of the home opened.

Police attempted to locate someone living at the residence, but no one was home.

Officers were able to find out that the father of the 3-year-old was working at H-E-B.

A short time after the incident, the father arrived at home and said he left the child with Garza.

She then later arrived and allegedly stated she left the 3-year-old asleep at home because she assumed her nephew was there to take care of him.

Garza allegedly said that her nephew takes care of the boy while they are working.

The 32-year-old woman's bond is set at $2,500.
