A South Texas woman has sued U.S. Customs and Border Protection alleging excessive use of force by a customs officer in Brownsville.
The lawsuit filed Monday in federal court in Brownsville by the American Civil Liberties Union of Texas alleges that Laura Mireles suffered a miscarriage and other injuries when an officer threw her to the ground last year.
It took place outside a duty-free store near the Veterans International Bridge.
Two customs officers approached Mireles and a co-worker after they locked up the store.
According to the complaint, she let them search her car, but one officer threw her down. Mireles, who is disabled, was handcuffed so tightly the handcuffs later had to be cut off.
A CBP spokesman said the agency could not comment on pending litigation.
