Women pretended 9-year-old was granddaughter while smuggling child
Two women remain behind bars after they tried to smuggle an undocumented child through the border.
Sylvia Izarraras de Maldonado and Cynthia Ann Perez were allegedly taking the child to Corpus Christi, TX from Mexico through the Brownsville and Matamoros International Bridge Tuesday.
Driver Izarraras de Maldonado told U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officers that the nine-year-old was Perez TMs granddaughter.
The two women said they were also sisters.
Perez showed CBP officers a birth certificate, but through an investigation, officers determined the child was a Mexican national.
Documents said the two women picked up the child at the Matamoros Tamaulipas Bus Station, and was supposed to meet a relative of the child TMs in Corpus Christi.
The women were expected to be paid for smuggling the nine-year-old girl.
Magistrate Judge Ignacio Torteya denied bond for both women, and they remain in custody of the U.S. Marshal.
