A would-be carjacker is behind bars after he tried to take an SUV at knifepoint but the owner slammed the door in his face.
Weslaco police arrested 21-year-old Sergio Castillo early Monday morning.
Investigators told Action 4 News that the incident happened at the WalMart off North Texas Avenue around 1:45 a.m. Monday.
An off-duty police officer was working security at the store when it all happened.
Investigators said Castillo got dropped off in the parking lot by a black Chrysler 300 and walked over to a Chevrolet Tahoe.
Castillo allegedly demanded the SUV from the owner but the owner responded by slamming the car door in Castillo's face.
The would-be robber pulled out a knife and demanded the SUV again but the owner pushed Castillo away.
Castillo ran to the front of the store where the off-duty police officer was working.
The officer reported that Castillo appeared to be drunk.
Castillo appeared before a Weslaco Municipal Court judge on Monday morning where he was issued a $50,000 bond.
