After news reports prompted a flurry of tips, McAllen police find missing 13-year-old girl
McAllen police located a 13-year-old girl on Friday night — two days after she went missing.
Officers located 13-year-old Sylvia Faith Samaniego at about 9 p.m. Friday and took her home, according to a news release from the McAllen Police Department.
"In this case, exposure on local aired television broadcasts, internet news articles and social media prompted calls to police shortly after releasing this information to the public," according to the news release.
Police released few details about the case.
"This particular investigation may document a child engaging in 'conduct indicating a need for supervision' (Texas Family Code) and the details of this case may not be publicly released," according to the news release. "Crime tips, as well, are received in high confidence with the department and may not be disclosed."
Texas law protects virtually all information about children from public disclosure, including information related to police investigations and accidents.
"It is our active community, engaged with a common interest of public safety, and with the help of local media, that the McAllen Police Department was better able to serve the public," according to the news release.
